Oh, I see. Now things are sad. Pitch had such an opportunity to no longer be lonesome. And yet, he took the path as he saw it: to hold dear a mortal when you are immortal is a heavy burden. I can see why he would try and avoid any such bonds. It would have been painful had he established any feelings towards the boy.
The second pannel is great, but it's the third that really gets me. With anyone else, Pitch surrounding them with shadow would probably be an act of aggression, and the individual in question would be terrified. The little boy on the other hand, is unbothered. It makes the action seem affectionate- putting a barrier between the boy and the world. Or you could say the boy is (almost) literally being embraced by shadows.
It's possibly still very unnerving (and I would advise against touching the stuff), but I think the boy is now used enough to Pitch doing that, it barely makes him jump anymore. Barely.
