My thoughts went dark today- quick doodles and notes done in one evening- about Iroh's war at Ba Sing Se. I'm possibly way off, but what the hey.

Last of the Iroh story notes, time to move on and finish other things that need to be completed.

Iroh leaving the power to his brother has been mentionned on a recent interview that Mike and Bryan gave at AvatarSpirit.Net (Shamelessly pimping the site!)
Just working around that idea.
That page made me feel dark and moody. Better work on something else and more fun next.

All characters belong to Mike, Bryan, Nickelodeon and Viacom.

So, like, is there some way that you can magically become the director/head-writer for the made-for-TV-animated-movie of Iroh's life?

P-Please?

Ha ha, I don't think so. Plus, they already have an awesome (and experienced) directing- writers team, so they would take directly from there IF they ever made an Iroh story.
One can dream.

Ouch.

I always figured Azulon had Lu Ten assassinated, because he thought his elder son was weak for loving anybody and wanted to cure his heir from that terrible affliction. Azulon made it to look like it was the Earth Kingdom soldiers that did it, hoping it would whip Iroh into a murderous rage that would let him fianlly conquer Ba Sing Se. The plan backfired.

The joy of the fanverse is the multitude of possibilities and darn if I don't love this version to bits too!

Your version has as much value, since in canon it was never explained. But Iroh was a great general up until the siege at Ba Sing Se. Azulon must have seen his elder son prowess and if anything saw it as great achievement. So what if Iroh had a few quirks- he still conquered.

*g* There's a lot of speculation out there about Azulon favouring Iroh over Ozai and I think that's totally true for most of their lives.
But Azulon was getting old and I think he might have wanted to iron out that one little flaw he saw in his eldest son before entrusting the rule of the Empire to him. Going by what I've seen in the series, striving for perfection is something that's important to the royal family.

I suspect Azulon was pretty satisfied with Iroh's military conquests...but that the flashes of kindness and love that Iroh showed (e.g. Azulon might have seen Iroh laughing and playing with Lu Ten in the gardens) bothered him.

I can just picture Azulon demanding of a steward why the hell his eldest son wasn't inspecting the troops right now and being told that Iroh was off with his son, flying kites, because (quote Prince Iroh) "the wind is JUST right for that today and the troops don't need ANOTHER inspection this week.". And I can almost see Azulon's eyes narrowing at that and his mouth turning into a thin, hard line.

Also, as depicted in one of your Iroh scraps, I think Iroh actually played pretty much by the rules during the war and I think Azulon might have wanted to go beyond that...and if my calculations are correct, he actually did. Assuming they are, it was Azulon who ordered the last waterbender of the Southern Water Tribe killed instead of captured. Thankfully and sadly, Yon Rah ended up killing Kya...and not Katara.

Knowing Iroh, Azulon would have known that his eldest son wasn't ruthless enough (yet...) to order that kind of murder and he wanted the kind of heir that would.

You need to do more of these. What great reading they are. I love your take on the grey areas the show hinted at or didn't cover.
