How grand it must have been, to have seen the millions of buffaloes roaming the plains...
Also, hinting at other winter spirits. For there was winter way before Jack Frost. He doesn't have the monopoly on the season! In fact, he is just but a small, mild aspect of it.
Though he is capable of quite a punch when need be.

Jack Frost (this version) belongs to Dreamworks.

I also like the way you worked the topic of Jack being a small spirit =)
if you think about it, it's quite understandable

I have never seen a buffalo before...I would love to, though.

I keep thinking of winter as a Lady, cold and cruel, even unforgiving... but with a hidden warm spot.

I find there tends to be a bit of winter and summer in all seasons, even when one of them takes their turn to rule the land.

There are female winter spirits in Japan- cruel ones (with sometimes a soft spot).

Yeah, I think I've come across at least one legend pertaining to them.  Some lone traveler gets caught in a snowstorm, and suddenly comes across a small hot spring in a small house... with a very beautiful woman to greet him...

Could be getting my stories mixed up though. ^^; I do notice the Japanese have a lot of folktales warning against traveling alone.  Wonder why that is?

Belief is power. Sadly there isn't always enough to go around.

Man, millions of buffalo were around a scant 200 years ago. I can't imagine how different the world would be today if settlers of the past were more understanding of how to care for the world around them. :(

The destruction of the buffaloes was done for multiple reasons- they certainly didn't care about natural order.

I've always loved the idea of other winter spirits - such as the one mentioned here... I've heard of 'Father Frost' and 'Old Man Winter' and I always play with the idea in my head of Jack meeting one of them, like they would represent the harshness and cruelty of Winter as it is the deadliest season
I wonder what his reaction would be to that as I've always seen him as quite innocent in a sense
Also, I love his eyes in the last panel! Maybe it's the colour I'm not sure
And the idea of spirits 'fading' is an interesting one

Possibly the bigger, ancient powers of winter may be harsher than Jack.
He's probably not enjoy the meetings.
The concept of spirits fading has been touched by many other writers (many way way waaaaay better than me).
I'm just enjoying playing with it too :)

There has to be many various form of spirits, depending on people's beliefs around the world: some environment based, or animal based, or fantastical beasts. Endless choices.
Now if only they stopped disappearing...

When I read "The Great Winter," the first thing that came to mind was Old Man Winter, though in my mind he's more annoying than deadly. That might just be my thinking, though.

Still, interesting comic. I'll keep reading on

Perhaps there's an old man winter in a certain part of the world, and a great winter somewhere, and other cold-snow related spirits elsewhere. There certainly was a form of winter before Jack existed.

Lots of people in the fandom like to imagine, that there's more than one winter spirit, like the Snow Queen or General Winter, or King Winter. It would make sense too, because let's be honest, winter is a powerful season. And while Jack has his strengths, he can only do so much.

Very true. Plus, winter has been going for waaaaaaaayyyy longer than Jack has ever existed. He's just the newcomer on the scene.

That is true. Jack Frost has only been dead recently so there must be other winter spirit before him. That would make a lot more sense.

There are many more, some representing different aspects of winter or are just associated with snow and cold. It's pretty complex.
But how many are left, that is the question.

There are many legends of spirit, god, demon, and whatnot that seemed to correspond to winter or snow in many culture and legends. It's really interesting how you indirectly mention them.
