An old foe resurfaces

Wed Feb 24, 2010, 4:38 PM
I feel like calling them my nemesis.

Some of you may remember a post from last summer, about a publisher that copy-pastes articles from Wikipedia and sells them as books (quite possibly print on demand).

Said group was called Alphascript Publishing, belonging to VDM Publishing.
I had gotten this book, returned it, got a refund, and started warning people against them:

They're back again, under a NEW NAME!
They are now....

*drumroll*

BETASCRIPT PUBLISHING!!

Extra points lost for lack of originality.

With new editors (copy pasters, possibly false names), over 10 000 titles of copy-pasted articles straight from FREE Wikipedia.

The only change: they now advertise that these are from "High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles!"

High quality content...*COUGH!!*

Quality content that can be edited by anyone and everyone, plus so called "editors" that do no fact checking to see if the related quality content is actually relevant to the book topic.
For example:

What does Locksmithing has to do with SARGON II?!?
Someone give me a FACTUAL and HISTORICAL link to Sargon II and locksmithing and I'll draw you a sketch.
EDIT: And the sketch goes to ~Penumbra-Ex
What? I want to know if people read this journal and know little historical tidbits ;)
It still doesn't validate throwing the name of Sargon II on the cover of a book, or even less Tigris.

Time to go and kick their butts again. Leave warning in their book reviews. Stay professional when you do.

A big thank you to ~Spleef on DA for the heads up.

Lastly, this interesting case of a book that is so close in many ways to another work, it is on the fringe of plagiarism.

I hate to say it, but it looks like Amazon or Alpha/Betascript deleted all your warnings on their crap. Once in a while I go through their crap and select it to be listed by customer review, so I can see what snark other people have to say about them, and I couldn't find a single damn review of yours on A or B-script. :/

Very interesting.
Is it just me, or have all negative comments been deleted too? I was not the only one posting warnings about the book and its quality. I'll go have a look, maybe share again some scans I did of the interior of that one book if they have been deleted too.
I will have to ask Amazon about their policy of negative reviews. I mean, what's the point of leaving a review if the publisher can just delete those he or she doesn't agree with?

A negative review is supposed to be about the product itself. My reviews were deleted because I snarked on Alphascript itself, so I wrote a new review about the products themselves, like complaining about clunky formatting, lack of editing/clean up, poor quality images and the like, and copypasta'd that all over the place. So far they remain intact. I'm not sure why they would delete yours, since yours were more factual and a lot less snarky than my old reviews. You might want to email Amazon (like I did) and ask why yours were deleted.

On the upside, they did delete all of VDM Verlag's reviews.

I found out that even positive reviews of other books I had written were deleted. I have contacted Amazon about it and am waiting for a response.
Maybe they only keep reviews for a certain amount of time? Sounds weird if they do.

Reviews that I wrote several years ago still exist. I think it's just that they guessed that all of your reviews would be the same and that it wouldn't be worth checking out each and every one. Which speaks a lot about the sloppiness of their staff.

If this is a growing problem, Amazon may have to revisit it's policies regarding publications from small and independent publishers.

I don't know what Amazon would do, as it is pushing really hard to get some control on some Print On Demand business.
I guess it's part of the risk in that business.
